FTE-Youth

Non-Formal Education (NFE) | Jordan & Syria

Access to quality education has the power to transform the lives of marginalized youth. To be uneducated is to be sidelined and excluded from vocational and personal opportunities - often for life. In Jordan, Questscope pioneered a learning program in partnership with the Jordanian Ministry of Education (MoED) that enables out-of-school youth to continue their education – restoring youth to the same opportunities that their peers achieved through the formal system. NFE provides creative approaches for youth needing a second chance at education, including a pathway to educational credentials – an outcome critical to reintegration of young people into economic and social opportunities. NFE is the first and only General Education Equivalence Degree Program (GED) in the Arab world and has enrolled more than 25,000 youth since 2003. The Syrian Society for Social Development (SSSD), our Syrian national partner, cooperates with the Syrian Ministry of Education, and, over the past year, has restored 73,000 youth to education. SSSD provides group and individual courses for youth in 125 formal schools and informal education at 60 community centers and shelters. Over the past year, SSSD has provided 92,000 school supplies and books for students and contributed to the restoration and rehabilitation of more than 45 schools.

Aqaba Food Voucher Program

Aqaba Food Voucher Program

In Jordan, Aqaba is host to a growing and desperate population of refugee families. There are no jobs, no resources, and no safety net. Their suffering is mostly unseen and few people know they even exist. Many parents are left with the unbearable choice of subjecting one of their daughters to early marriage so they can feed their younger children - the most desperate of choices. There are only hard decisions left for refugee families in Aqaba. But the Aqaba Food Voucher Program serves 120 of the most vulnerable families in Aqaba by providing integrated support for food, medicine, and education. Families can take back control of their lives – and parents don’t have to face choices that no parent should ever have to make.
