For the last four months, 61 mentors and students have been busy building trust with each other and participating in One2One's social and emotional learning curriculum. Week after week, mentors have flooded North View Junior High in Brooklyn Park, MN, and transformed our classrooms into an individualized learning experience for each student. During the program mentors help students develop their ability to regulate anger, problem-solve, manage their time, and build social skills.
The mentoring relationships are also having a significant impact on the mentors. One of our mentors, recently reflecting on his role, told the staff, "The more my student asks me for advice the more I'm forced to address the areas in my life where I need to follow the same advice I'm giving."
The One2One staff is also recruiting additional mentors for the 18 new students added to the program in early December, which brings the total to 79 students. This number is significant because it means that 10 percent of North View students will be in a mentoring relationship and experiencing a highly supportive school experience. When asked by one of the unmatched students, "Do you have a mentor for me yet?", it's exciting to be able to say that 40 people have applied to be their mentor and they will be coming next week. We hope that as our partnership with North View continues, we'll be able to say to even more students, "Don't worry, your mentor is coming."
